Arbor Hills Nature Preserve

Arbor Hills Nature Preserve is a wonderful place to walk and enjoy North Texas wildlife, plants, and eco-regions. The park features a blackland prairie, an upland forest, and a riparian forest.


The park has paved and unpaved trails, restrooms, and picnic areas. Bring water, bug spray, and sunscreen (for the tall grasses that can have chiggers). AATA bus stops are close by.



Hiking Trails


The park’s 3 miles of paved trails are perfect for anything from a leisurely stroll after dinner to a calorie-burning run. For those looking to stretch their legs a bit further, there are also 3 miles of unpaved trails that wrap around the park.


The trails are open daily from dawn to dusk. Pets are welcome on leashes. Be sure to wear bug spray and sunscreen. Also, be mindful of wild animals and poison ivy/poison oak. Several bridges over creeks are located throughout the park. The trail map is a great resource to help plan your hike!


Off-Road Biking Trails


Arbor Hills is a safe and family-friendly place to explore nature. It’s a great choice for cyclists and runners looking to avoid paved roads. There are three miles of paved trails and 2.8 miles of dirt trails to enjoy. The park has a large parking lot and a couple of pavilions, restrooms, and a playground.


The paved trail system can get quite busy during the weekend, so consider arriving early or choosing an off-peak day to hit the trails. Remember to bring bug spray and a hat; be mindful of poison ivy, ticks, and other insects. Be watchful for wild animals and venomous snakes as well.


Bird Watching


The woods and wetlands of this park are a natural home to a wide variety of bird species. Grab your binoculars and take a stroll along the trails. Keep an eye out for scissor-tailed flycatchers, slender birds with salmon coloring above and white underneath with a very long tail.


This 200-acre preserve is a popular place for trail running, bike riding, and bringing the kids and pets to enjoy the outdoors. There are miles of paved and off-road hiking trails, a pond to walk around, a playground, and picnic areas to visit. It is also a great place to look for wildflowers (during appropriate seasons). This park has an extensive volunteer program with ongoing and limitless opportunities to get involved!


Picnicking


Arbor Hills Nature Preserve is a place left untouched by modern development, and it offers a serene experience for hikers. During a stroll along the trails, visitors can see animals, plants, and eco-regions native to North Central Texas.


Explore the preserve’s riparian forest, upland forest, and blackland prairie while you walk on the paved and unpaved trails. Look out for the State Flower of Texas, the bluebonnet, during its peak blooming season in March and April.


Keep a lookout for coyotes, bobcats and other wildlife, but avoid interacting with any wild animal. Also, be prepared to encounter venomous snakes and poison ivy while hiking in the park.


Camping


Arbor Hills Nature Preserve is a fantastic outdoor escape in the heart of the city. This 200-acre park is a great place for outdoor enthusiasts of all kinds and offers vast areas for hiking, jogging, orienteering and much more. It also has a playground, a pavilion and an observation tower.


It is important to note that this park is a nature preserve and you will be in close proximity to wild animals, insects and poison ivy. Therefore, it is important to wear appropriate footwear and clothing at all times. Please bring sunscreen and bug spray to avoid insect bites. Leashed pets are welcome.


General Information


The park offers a huge amount of wild spaces for hiking, jogging and biking. The paved Trailway and the unpaved Pond, Outer, and Tower trail all provide great walking opportunities. There are also creeks, forest areas, a large playground and a picnic area.


The upland forest has shade trees such as the common cedar elm and pink-flowered Eve’s Necklace. In the spring, the meadows are bursting with color from native grasses and wildflowers.


This is a nature preserve, so be on the lookout for wildlife including bobcats and coyotes. You may also encounter venomous snakes and poison ivy. It is best to wear appropriate footwear and stay on the trails.
